“Knowledge infused with wonder of the divine Creator becomes the wisdom which we long for our children to possess…”

— Helen Wix, “The PNEU Ideal in Education,” The Parents’ Review, Vol. 30, pp. 84, 88

“This is the faith in which we would bring up our children, this strong, passionate sense of the dear nearness of our God ... for we are on the other side of all doubt once we know Him in whom we have believed.”

— Charlotte Mason, Parents and Children, p. 136

“It is well that we ‘ask for the old paths, where is the good way’; it is not well that, in the name of the old paths, we lead our children into blind alleys; nor that we let them follow the new into bewildering mazes.”

— Charlotte Mason, Parents and Children, p.49

“Truly that one sentence, “The child is a person,” is not merely a text for many a sermon but a basis for the daily life of teaching and training in home, in schoolroom and in school.”

— R. A. Pennethorne, The Parents’ Review,1929, pp. 670-674

“We cannot make a child 'good'; but ... we can lay paths for the good life in the very substance of his brain. We cannot make him hear the voice of God; but, again, we can make paths where the Lord God may walk in the cool of the evening.”

— Charlotte Mason, Formation of Character, p.142

“... it is well we should realize that the most trivial incident of the day, the execution of every moment’s work, makes for, or away from, the ideal we work for.
This, I suppose, is the meaning of the Badge you have chosen with remarkable unanimity: I have found your action in this matter very inspiring.

Your deliberate choice of the “humble plant” as best expressing your aims gives me a cheering sense that you realize the meaning of our work and also gives me, for my own part, many helpful thoughts about the meaning of humility...

To us, who take the Rush for our Badge, there are no little things, no things that do not matter...

Another thing, I think, our Rush probably means to all of us is, that we work at things both great and small without any thought at all of our own honour and renown.

I am glad you have given us this Badge, dear friends. I expect to gain great help from the constant inspiration of it...

I think, perhaps, that now you are co-workers, labouring together with me for the self-same ends, we shall understand each other more perfectly and draw even more closely together...”

Charlotte Mason, L’Umile Pianta, January 1896, p. 2

“For their sakes I sanctify myself” (John 17:19)

“For their sakes I sanctify myself” (John 17:19)

Ye who for the truth contending,
love the path which Jesus trod,
Help the children who are wending
that same way to worship God.
Wake! Awake!
Keep the road for the children’s sake!

On through wilderness or garden,
Blackest night or fairest day,
Casting out the cares which harden,
Tread the path, prepare the way,
Courage take!
Faithful be! For the children’s sake.

Cultivate the desert places,
Plough sand so the fallow ground,
Plant with joy the barren spaces
Which in every realm abound.
Wake! Awake!
Labour now! For the children’s sake.

Seek not ease, and love not leisure,
Give to Caesar all his due,
Lay not up the earthly treasure,
Other gold they need of you.
All forsake!
Follow Christ — For the children’s sake.

You who see the acorn lying
Humbly in the cool spring earth
Learn to share its patient dying,
Learn to wait its glorious birth.
Sleep — to wake!
Lose yourselves for the children’s sake.

In the precious months of training,
In the patient years of toil,
When at length you are attaining
Mastery of air and soil.
God’s hand take,
Hold it fast, for the children’s sake.

~ Essex Cholmondeley

“I think we should have a great educational revolution once we ceased to regard ourselves as assortments of so-called faculties, and realised ourselves as persons whose great business it is to get in touch with other persons of all sorts and condition; of all countries and climes, of all times, past and present.

History would become entrancing, literature a magic mirror for the discovery of other minds, the study of sociology a duty and a delight. We should tend to become responsive and wise, humble and reverent, recognising the duties and the joys of the full human life. We cannot of course overtake such a programme of work, but we can keep it in view; and I suppose every life is moulded upon its ideal.”

“That highest form of confidence, known to us as faith, is necessary to full repose of mind and manner. When we recognise that God does not make over the bringing up of children absolutely even to their parents, but that He works Himself, in ways which it must be our care not to hinder, in the training of every child, then we shall learn passiveness, humble and wise.

We shall give children space to develop on the lines of their own characters in all right ways, and shall know how to intervene effectually to prevent those errors which, also, are proper to their individual characters.”

“Now, that work which is of most importance to soc

“Now, that work which is of most importance to society is the bringing up and instruction of the children–in the school, certainly, but far more in the home, because it is more than anything else the home influences brought to bear upon the child that determine the character and career of the future man or woman. It is a great thing to be a parent: there is no promotion, no dignity, to compare with it…

…it is upon the mothers of the present that the future of the world depends, in even a greater degree than upon the fathers, because it is the mothers who have the sole direction of the children’s early, most impressible years. This is why we hear so frequently of great men who have had good mothers––that is, mothers who brought up their children themselves, and did not make over their gravest duty to indifferent persons.

“The mother is qualified,” says Pestalozzi, “and qualified by the Creator Himself, to become the principal agent in the development of her child; ... and what is demanded of her is––a thinking love . . . God has given to the child all the faculties of our nature, but the grand point remains undecided––how shall this heart, this head, these hands be employed? to whose service shall they be dedicated? A question the answer to which involves a futurity of happiness or misery to a life so dear to thee. Maternal love is the first agent in education.”

We are waking up to our duties and in proportion as mothers become more highly educated and efficient, they will doubtless feel the more strongly that the education of their children during the first six years of life is an undertaking hardly to be entrusted to any hands but their own. And they will take it up as their profession––that is, with the diligence, regularity, and punctuality which men bestow on their professional labours.

That the mother may know what she is about, may come thoroughly furnished to her work, she should have something more than a hearsay acquaintance with the theory of education, and with those conditions of the child’s nature upon which such theory rests.”

~ Charlotte Mason, “Home Education,” pages 1-3

“The flowers, it is true, are not new; but the children are; and it is the fault of their elders if every new flower they come upon is not to them a Picciola, a mystery of beauty to be watched from day to day with unspeakable awe and delight.”

Charlotte Mason, “Home Education”, page 53

“When we fail, when we are unhappy, when things go

“When we fail, when we are unhappy, when things go wrong, let us not fear, there is always the Resurrection. When our hearts are sick and sad, when we think no one can help; when we see the image of the earthly in evil action, in evil presence, let us remember there is a resurrection coming, always coming. We may not live to see it, but the peace of God will come.”

Charlotte Mason, “Scale How Meditations”, pg. 225

“The note of Easter Day is joy—Resurrection. We say, ‘I believe in the Resurrection of the Dead.’ What do we believe? It is part of the creed for which Christians have died, and it means so much that it is difficult to put it into words. We think of the rising of the body and can only understand it by that recognition which is part of our creed. It is a mystery to be believed and adored, and the words come as a trumpet sound...

“Our life is infinitely rich and, in the resurrection life, we rise to newness of life. How do we know that we shall go on increasing? There is a something which we are never going to lose. We increase in power, we increase in joy. The resurrection must be so much more full. If we love on earth, enjoy beauty, glory in sweet sounds, heroic deeds, we shall glory, enjoy and love, much more in the life to come.”
